Florida Added $405 Million to Home Hardening Programs: A Funding Route for Deferred Roof Work

Florida's My Safe Florida Home program got a major funding boost when the state Legislature passed a nearly $115 billion budget over Memorial Day weekend 2026, with a final floor vote on May 29. The deal reappropriates more than $405 million in unused funds combined across two related programs: $378 million to My Safe Florida Home and $27 million to My Safe Florida Condominium, aimed squarely at a backlog of roughly 45,000 homeowners who had already completed a wind mitigation inspection but never received their grant before earlier funding ran out. For anyone maintaining Florida homes built before 2008, this is a meaningful, state funded route to fund roof and wind mitigation work that might otherwise sit on a deferred maintenance list.

The program pairs a free wind mitigation inspection with a matching grant of up to $10,000, with the state contributing $2 for every $1 the homeowner puts in. To qualify, a home generally must have been built before January 1, 2008, since homes built after that date already meet the current Florida Building Code wind standard the program is designed to bring older homes up to. The 2025-2026 funding cycle reopened on August 4, 2025 with roughly $352 million, and the Memorial Day 2026 budget's $405 million reappropriation is specifically meant to work through the backlog of homeowners who completed their inspection but were left waiting when that earlier cycle's money ran out.

What the grant actually covers

The program recognizes four categories of wind mitigation improvement: roof-to-wall connections, roof deck attachment, secondary water resistance, and opening protection, which includes impact windows, doors and garage doors. If a home's roof is at the end of its service life, the grant can also fund a full re-roof using materials and installation methods that meet current wind code, not just a patch or partial repair. Every improvement funded through the program has to follow a specific sequence: a qualifying initial inspection first, then a licensed Florida contractor performing the work, then a final inspection to close out the grant. Starting work before written approval disqualifies the project entirely.

Why this belongs on a maintenance radar now

A home that already has a wind mitigation inspection on file, even an older one, is a candidate for this backlog funding, and a home that has never been inspected can still apply for the current cycle while funding remains available. Since funding is allocated first-come, first-served within priority groups and can be exhausted before a cycle formally ends, the properties worth flagging first are the ones already showing roof age, deferred flashing repairs, or weak roof-to-wall connections that a routine inspection would likely surface anyway.

For an owner or manager sitting on a list of older, pre-2008 roofs, checking each property's inspection and application status against this reopened funding is a straightforward way to convert a known maintenance need into work that costs the property significantly less than doing it without the match.

It is worth noting that roof-only grants tend to deliver a smaller insurance premium discount than a fuller package covering windows, roof and roof-to-wall connections together, so a property already planning more than one wind mitigation item may get more value from bundling that work into a single application rather than applying for a roof grant alone.

The funding exists to move deferred roof and wind mitigation work off the list, but only for properties that get into the pipeline while the money is still there.
